Victory ! A historic week for the High Seas
To those who signed the Paris Appeal for the High Seas,
Almost two years after your signature, following intense negotiations at the United Nations that ended late Friday night January 23, member countries finally agreed to a legal instrument for the management of biodiversity in the High Seas !
The process is now underway at the UN to negotiate and draft parts of a binding international treaty that will fill the legal void : until now, biodiversity in the High Seas has had no management or protection.
The Paris Appeal – along with the petition launched by the Global Ocean Commission and the efforts of the Alliance for the High Seas – were key advocacy tools to attract the attention of citizens and policy makers on this issue, little known but absolutely essential for the future of humanity. We thank you for your support on this historic date !
